  17. <p>    "I've always had to divide my focus," says Barcelona-bound
  18. Olympic athlete Carl Lewis. "This will be the first time I won't
  19. have to." In truth, the American track star, now vying for the
  20. gold in the long jump, could have lived with a little divided
  21. focus. But at the U.S. Olympic trials in New Orleans, Lewis
  22. washed out of the 100- and 200-m races, part of an epidemic of
  23. defeat that afflicted some of America's most gifted athletes,
  24. including four world champions. Observes Lewis: "The most
  25. frustrating thing is that DAN O'BRIEN, who should be in
  26. Barcelona, is not going at all." Decathloner O'Brien lost a spot
  27. on the U.S. team following three flubbed voyages over the bar
  28. in the pole-vaulting event. The day's biggest loser: Reebok
  29. athletic shoes. Their $25 million "Dan and Dave" ad campaign was
  30. pegged to the progress of O'Brien and fellow decathlete Dave
  31. Johnson toward the Summer Games. The campaign will continue --
  32. but inevitably focusing more on "and Dave."
